Health and Work Service

The Department for Work and Pensions has announced that Health Management Limited, a subsidiary of MAXIMUS UK, has been successful in its bid to operate the new Health and Work Service. Each year around 900,000 people have sickness absence for four weeks or more. Eleven million people in the UK take sickness absence and around 300,000 drop out of work into benefits. Sickness absence from work costs employers £9bn and employees £4bn each year. The Health and Work Service is a voluntary service for individuals who are on sick leave from work. Their GP or, after four weeks, their employer can refer them to a dedicated support service where an initial telephone consultation with an appropriate clinician will identify the problems preventing an individual returning to work and then propose a return to work plan. It will launch by the end  of 2014.
