How small businesses can tackle poor mental health among employees

After the challenges of the pandemic, rising costs are an unwelcome addition to existing pressures for small businesses.

With 69% of small and micro business owners reporting that the cost-of-living crisis is affecting their mental health*, and more small business owners experiencing burnout, it’s the ideal time for SMEs to review their provision for mental health support, and highlight the help that is available to their staff.

In light of the challenges now faced by small businesses, it’s perhaps surprising that a recent report by the Federation of Small Businesses found that only 1 in 20 (5%) small businesses have used a government-funded scheme to support employees with health conditions – despite 45% of small businesses being aware of it.

The Access to Work Mental Health Support Service is part of a range of support offered by Maximus UK to small businesses, funded by the Department for Work and Pensions, which provides free, confidential mental health support to any employee in paid employment struggling with their mental health.

Dr Nick Zygouris, Director of Mental Health at Maximus UK, said:

“Through the Access to Work Mental Health Support Service, Maximus offers accessible mental health and wellbeing support – indispensable for small businesses aiming to support their employees’ health in increasingly difficult conditions.”
