Through Work and Health Programme Pioneer, our colleagues are continuing to make a positive difference to thousands of lives. Across London, Wales, and Southern England, we’re equipping participants with new skills and the confidence to find sustainable employment.
From mental health struggles to seeking help
For 15 years, Dagenham resident James, 40, worked as a library assistant. However, he resigned in order to concentrate on managing his mental health.
Reflecting on his struggles, James said: “I did enjoy working at the library. But due to my anxiety I was taking time off and then feeling stressed about returning.
“It was a difficult decision, but my mental health was becoming a factor in my everyday life. And I realised I needed to take care of me, so I resigned.”
Battling anxiety, depression and PTSD since childhood, resulted in James being out of work for two years. His challenges were further exacerbated by not being able to find alternative employment.
A path back to work
Whilst receiving support from his mental health practitioner, James was encouraged to contact and join Pioneer for help to find work. After joining the programme and meeting his dedicated Employment Advisor in March 2024, the father-of-three received the tailored guidance and support he needed to navigate the labour market.
James continued: “Maximus guided me, and helped me feel that I was good enough. They made me feel at ease and worked to build my confidence. Just knowing that there was someone there to support me was really helpful.”

Determined to find a role that would allow him a healthy work/life balance, James attended employability sessions, crafted a professional CV and received intensive interview coaching.
Building a career with confidence
After just three months of support, James felt confident enough to apply for a Facilities Administrator position with one of our employer partners, London-based housing association, L&Q. Following a successful interview, he began working again in June 2024.
Wunmi Oladapo, Facilities Team Leader at L&Q, shared his progress: “James has settled well into the role, and I have the pleasure of managing him. He is a fast learner, works well within the team, and often has new ideas. I know he will go on to do great things.”

Since joining L&Q nearly a year ago, James remains positive and is looking forward to progressing and building his career with the team. He added: “When I had lost all confidence and faith in myself, Maximus put me back together again, they changed my life.
“At Maximus there is a group of people whose sole purpose is to help others, and I would 100% recommend them to anyone struggling to find work. They helped me and I can’t thank them enough.”
