As part of its social value commitment, Maximus UK gives colleagues two days a year to volunteer at charities close to their heart. In Sheffield, a team of Maximus staff joined Ben’s Centre CEO, Daryl Bishop, and his team a helping hand.

Ben’s Centre helps people with drug and alcohol addiction and provides an outreach team that patrols the homeless community.

Their new venture will not only help the charity raise funds to sustain the work they do in their daycentre but it will also provide valuable work experience opportunities for the charity’s clients.

The team spent the day putting up shelving, sifting through stock donated by the local community and organising the shop ready for the first customers.

Jemma Johnstone, Service Delivery Director at Maximus UK, said:

“It was a privilege to help Ben’s Centre set up their new charity shop in the city. Spending the day with the team was really enjoyable and totally different to our normal workday. We had the opportunity to learn more about Ben’s Centre and the important work they do to support people in the community.

It’s great that Maximus gives us the time to support charities in the community and is certainly something myself and the team will be doing again.”

Daryl Bishop, CEO at Ben’s Centre, said:

“This is the first venture into a retail space for the Ben’s Centre. There are three strands to the programme – the information hub where we will be able to share information on local charities and advertise all the great work that is happening in Sheffield. There will be opportunities for work experience for our clients, and there’s also the retail where we’re hoping to raise funds to sustain the work we do in our day centre.

We look after a community that can’t be left behind, so we have had to keep our day centre open, we can’t shut down to do another venture. Without these volunteers from Maximus UK, we would not have been able to set up. I’m so incredibly grateful to Maximus UK for all the hard work they have put in. It’s been amazing.”
