Remploy is extremely proud of our employer partnerships and, as a business, collaboration is a key element to our success.

Our Employer Engagement team engage with many partners across Wales to source sustainable employment opportunities for our participants. Since 2019, we have been working in partnership with Tesco in Ystrad Mynach and have supported a considerable number of Remploy participants to gain work experience and employment, through the various contracts Remploy Cymru deliver.

Mark Jones, Tesco Store Manager, highlights the benefits of working in partnership with Remploy:

“We’ve had great success working in partnership with Remploy to recruit colleagues over the years. I am delighted to say that many of my key staff colleagues have been supported back into employment through our partnership with Remploy.

“There are so many success stories I could mention but the one that stands out is Iestyn Grills. He had been unemployed for several years and just needed an opportunity.

“He did such a fantastic job that he has now been promoted to shift leader and his confidence is growing by the day.”

Unemployed for 15 years, Iestyn from Caerphilly, was referred to the Work and Health Programme in September 2019. Although he wanted to work, he was suffering with Fibromyalgia which caused pain all over his body, so he was apprehensive about how he could manage his health condition whilst working.

He was reassured by Laura Evans, Remploy’s Account Manager in Caerphilly, about what he could expect and the health adjustments that Remploy could make. Iestyn soon completed his placement and was offered a Team Colleague position with Tesco, a month after joining the Work and Health Programme.

Since first joining Tesco, he has now progressed to the role of Team Manager within the branch.

Iestyn said of his experience with Remploy:

“I am so happy I was referred to Remploy, it’s the best thing that’s happened to me in 15 years.

“I really wanted to work but I was unsure how I was going to cope. The placement opportunity that Tesco offered was great and showed me what I could achieve. Remploy have helped change my life and I can’t thank them enough!”

As part of our work with Tesco, Laura delivers sessions to participants, ensuring everyone has a full understanding of the company ahead of their work trial. When the placement ends, participants can progress into work by completing a condensed application, which Remploy support with. So far, Remploy has placed 12 participants with Tesco.

Laura Evans, Remploy Account Manager said:

“Tesco is a great example of an employer supporting and helping disadvantaged people back to work. The work placements are a great success and I’m extremely proud to be able to play my part in this amazing relationship with Tesco.

“It always brings a smile to my face when I think about how many people have gone on to secure work with Tesco following one of my development sessions. Participants generally start with little or no confidence and sometimes no retail experience but because of the fantastic support Tesco offer, when they start work, they grow and develop.”
