Pontypool charity awarded grant to provide support for carers

Pontypool charity the Torfaens Carers Centre has been presented with a grant of £2,500 from MAXIMUS Foundation UK to fund the provision of a therapist to support the carers and families of disabled and vulnerable people.

Louise Alderman-Hook, the manager of the Torfaens Carers Centre, received the award from MAXIMUS Foundation trustee Rob Winter and Raymond McBrien, who also nominated the charity for the grant. The centre, which is currently undergoing a re-launch, provides events and group away days for disabled families; also providing therapy services including massage and other support for carers.

The grant will be used by the centre to fund the provision of additional therapy support, subsidised for low income families.

The MAXIMUS Foundation UK was founded in 2015 with a remit of providing grants to local charities and non-profit organisations that support disadvantaged groups - particularly those contributing to personal growth and self-sufficiency in areas of health, employment and community development.

Marilyn Saunders, Chair of MAXIMUS Foundation UK, said: “It’s easy to forget that the families and carers of anyone with a disability have a huge responsibility on their shoulders. Often they are under considerable stress and pressure. They need support themselves, and the service the Torfaen Carers Centre provides is a great example of how this can be done effectively.”

Louise Alderman-Hook, Manager of the Torfaens Carers Centre, said: “We’re delighted that this grant will help us in extending the therapy services we can provide to carers. As Marilyn says, carers are under huge pressure and need to be supported, otherwise they are at risk of illness, exhaustion and mental health problems. The support we provide is critical to their wellbeing, and consequently valuable to ensuring the continued wellbeing of local disabled people.”

MAXIMUS Foundation UK has donated £85,000 in grants to charities and community groups in the last year. The Foundation has called for further grant applications from local charities and community organisations.
