On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we’re pleased to announce we are now a signatory of the Business in the Community Race at Work Charter.

Maximus joins a strong network of 900 leading organisations who have made a public commitment to promote racial equality in the workplace.

In 2017, the government-sponsored Race in the workplace: The McGregor-Smith Review found that Black, Asian, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse people still encounter significant disparities in employment and progression, and that is something we need to change.

The Charter is composed of seven calls to action for leaders and organisations across all sectors.

Signing the Charter means taking practical steps to ensure workplaces are tackling barriers that Black, Asian, Mixed Raced and other ethnically diverse people face in recruitment and progression and that their organisations are representative of British society today.

The Race At Work Charter outlines these seven calls to action to support businesses in their commitment to improving the equality of opportunity in the workplace:

  1. Appoint an Executive Sponsor for race equality.
  2. Capture ethnicity data and publicise progress.
  3. Commit at board level to zero tolerance of harassment and bullying
  4. Make equity, diversity and inclusion the responsibility of all leaders and managers.
  5. Take action that supports Black, Asian, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse employee career progression.
  6. Support race inclusion allies in the workplace.
  7. Include Black, Asian, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse-led enterprise owners in supply chains.

Our Diversity and Inclusion team will be working closely with our employee-led network, MaxCultural and MaxCultural Sponsor, Dr Paul Williams, to deliver a range of developments and initiatives across the business.

Dr Paul Williams, UK Division President, MaxCultural Sponsor, and Race at Work Charter Executive Sponsor, said:

“I am delighted to sign up to the Race at Work Charter on behalf of everyone in Maximus. The standards and aspirations of the Charter speak to what’s important to us – the ability to thrive at work for all of us based on our talent and hard work and not on race or other personal characteristics – and really chimes with our values – Collaboration, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Customer Focus and Compassion.

“Together we are making progress, with key areas of focus being recruitment and career progression, but there is more to do for us to be the best we can be and I hope everyone can help by playing their part.”
