Action Not Words: why we’re celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.

We are taking time to recognise the contribution made by black colleagues in making Maximus a great place to work. A place where all can thrive, regardless of background or heritage.

Since the launch of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) framework last year, we have expanded our MentorU programme. We have taken a proactive approach to the career progression and working lives of BAME colleagues.

This is reflected in the launch of MaxCultural, an employee-led network which promotes engagement, mentorship, networking and the celebration of cultural events.

It is also a forum to drive change in our business, and to provide feedback on policies and practices, sharing lived experience.

The theme of this year’s Black History Month is Action Not Words.

It coincides with the launch of our DE&I strategy for 2022, which is a step-change in how we promote diversity, equity and inclusion in every part of our business.

This includes auditing our polices to ensure they are as inclusive as possible, and continuing to drive data declaration, to better understand the diversity characteristics of colleagues.

Our MaxCultural network is sponsored by UK Division President, Dr Paul Williams.

Shereena Nain, Co-chair of MaxCultural summed up the past year, along with her hopes for Black History Month:

“There’s been a massive engagement within Maximus, and by being part of MaxCultural I have been reassured that the intentions are coming from a place of genuine concern.

“Black History Month is an opportunity for us to showcase the work we’re doing in MaxCultural, and to encourage colleagues to engage with the experiences of BAME colleagues.”

Amber Sorrell, Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, added:

“Maximus is really proud to celebrate the diversity of colleagues, and this Black History Month we’re recognising the ongoing work across the business to elevate diverse voices. To learn from their experiences to drive meaningful change.

“Looking ahead, in my role I’m prioritising increased diversity at management level, ensuring all colleagues feel truly included in the business.

“And lastly, providing a voice for under-represented groups so they feel they are making a difference at Maximus as well.”
